Brief Summary of Job Duties

Responsible for the training, maintenance, operation and research in electron microscopy, focused ion beam, atomic force microscopes and other advanced techniques. Along with another Research and Development Engineer 4, is responsible for thesupervision of the microscopy and microanalysis facility which serves more than 300 users annually and over 40 faculty research groups.


Minimum RequirementsAdvanced degree in related area and or equivalent experience / training.Strong background in research microscopy related to higher education.High level of expertise in two of the following and basic familiarity of the others: Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy.Ability to supervise a busy facility, maintain high-end research equipment and provide feedback and training to users on microscopy and microanalysis.Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner.Advanced interpersonal skills.Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner, assess complex challenges and recommend effective solutions.Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and influence others. Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

Facility Supervision - 30%


Along with another Research and Development Engineer 4, supervises the day-to-day operation of the 300+ user Microscopy and Microanalysis Facility for the Materials Department. Supervises activities of lab users; instructs/advises students, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting researchers on safe and appropriate laboratory techniques and processes; ensures safe and appropriate operation of high end microscopy equipment.
Coordinates scheduling and usage of instruments through recharge system. Maintains, designs, constructs, and installs equipment which is used in advanced microstructural and microanalytical characterization of novel and advanced materials, requiring a broad knowledge of scientific theory and practice. Provides advice on emerging methodologies in electron microscopy.


SEM - 20%


Assists with users and other facility personnel in the use of scanning electron microscopy equipment using the FEI/ThermoFisher Nova Nano FESEM, FEI/ThermoFisher Apreo S FESEM, FEI/ThermoFisher Apreo C FESEM, in the microscopy and microanalysis facility. Schedules routine maintenance and coordinates with users. Performs corrections to settings and fixes as necessary. Works with students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty in the use of equipment for research projects. Assists with training users on SEM techniques and works closely with SEM vendor for service contract work.


TEM - 35%


Develop and demonstrate a high level of expertise in transmission and scanning transmission electron microscopy technologies using the FEI/ThermoFisher Titan FEG S/TEM,
FEI/ThermoFisher Talos XFEG S/TEM,and FEI/ThermoFisher Spectra 200 Aberration-Corrected S/TEM in the microscopy and microanalysis facility. Requires expertise in electron optics and diffraction, field emission transmission and scanning transmission electron microscopy, aberration corrected electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy.
Train new users in all aspects of use of the TEM systems and ancillary tools. Perform routine maintenance of the TEM systems and maintain close ties to the TEM vendor for work to be performed under the service contract for each system.
Maintain proficiency with emerging TEM methods and teach short courses in TEM technology to the UCSB community


AFM - 10%


Assist with users and other facility personnel in the use of atomic force
microscopy(AFM)/scanning probe microscopy (SPM) using existing Asylum AFM/SPM tools. Schedules routine maintenance and coordinates with users. Performs corrections to settings and fixes as necessary. Works with students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty in the use of equipment for research projects. Assists with training users on AFM techniques and works closely with AFM vendor for service contract work.


Planning and Development - 5%


Helps faculty members plan for future equipment acquisition and development related to research directions on campus. Plans and coordinates facility infrastructure. Coordinates and oversees facility renovations. Assists in research strategy and execution.
