Job Description:


The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level in the area of Mechanical Design. Special consideration will be given to candidates in the fields of robotics, soft robotics, mechatronics, or machine learning. Specific areas of interest include but are not limited to product and process design, design innovation, multidisciplinary design optimization, computational modeling, and systems design. The appointment is expected to begin September 1, 2022.



Requirements:


The candidate must have the interest and ability to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows; contribute significantly to the advancement of science and engineering and develop a nationally recognized program of sponsored research. We anticipate the successful candidate will have a commitment to working within a diverse community of students and would pursue interdisciplinary research collaborations within the department and throughout the campus.


The candidate should have graduate or undergraduate teaching interests that draw from one or more of the following areas: mechanical design, process design, design innovation, multidisciplinary design optimization, design decision making, computational modeling, or systems design. Special consideration will be given to candidates in the fields of robotics, soft robotics, mechatronics, or machine learning.


Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field or anticipate such a degree by August 31, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.



Additional Information:


The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering has 36 full-time faculty members, over 160 graduate students, and over 750 undergraduates. Research expenditures exceeded $5.5 M in the last fiscal year. The Department has a long history of successful interdisciplinary research, including the Center for e-Design, Wind Energy Center, Cold Spray Research Group, Center for Personalized Health Monitoring, and the newly formed Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation. A Robotics Center of Excellence is being developed that involves interdisciplinary collaborations between faculty in the College of Engineering and College of Information and Computer Science.


The College of Engineering is ranked as the best public engineering college in New England. The Fall 2020 enrollment included 2,285 undergraduate and 599 graduate students. Research expenditures exceeded $60.5 M in the past year and the College is host to 14 research centers. The College has an excellent record of developing new faculty with 12 of our current faculty members receiving prestigious NSF CAREER awards in just the last three years.


The Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center provides state-of-the-art high-performance computing resources for UMass Amherst faculty with high-end computing equipment and storage, including thousands of CPU cores and GPU cards. UMass Amherst operates one of the biggest GPU clusters in the nation. In addition, the Institute for Applied Life Sciences on campus houses 34 shared core facilities on campus including the Advanced Digital Design and Fabrication facility, Device Characterization, and Nano Fabrication Cleanrooms.
