Instructor Pool - 2021/2022 Mfg/Mechatronics (MIME)

The School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering (MIME) within the College of Engineering at Oregon State University (OSU) invites applications for an instructor to teach in the Manufacturing Engineering program. The instructor position is a fixed-term, non-tenure track, 9-month, part-time position with the possibility of renewal at the discretion of the School Head. There is a potential for a full-time appointment for the 2021-2022 academic year depending upon the qualifications of the candidate and teaching needs.

The School comprises over 60 academic faculty and instructors, 20 professional faculty, staff and research associates who support nearly 2000 undergraduate and graduate students. The School offers undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Manufacturing Engineering. A highly interdisciplinary and collaborative group of faculty and staff in advanced manufacturing is pursuing the broad areas of automation, sensor fusion, smart and sustainable manufacturing, micro- and nano-manufacturing, materials science, and computational modeling.

In addition to on campus teaching, the Instructor may teach online courses through the University’s innovative and high-ranking Ecampus. New online courses in mechatronics comprise a four-course sequence encompassing introductory topics, logical control, digital control, and advanced signal processing and emerging topics. The instructor might also teach in the areas of computer aided design and dynamics and controls.

Instructor will teach courses in mechatronics and manufacturing engineering.Instructor may assist development of course materials and inform overall curriculum design.Responsibilities include equipping students with the required skill set, facilitating in person and online classroom discussions, assessing student performance, preparing students to be successful leaders in their chosen profession, and creating an inclusive classroom (e.g., mentoring and supporting students from diverse backgrounds, fostering affirming classroom interactions across difference, and challenging structural/cultural barriers that limit movement towards social equity in engineering education and practice).
5% Supervision
Instructors provide leadership, supervision, and direction for undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants. Minimum/Required Qualifications Master’s degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field.

Technical expertise in the broad areas of mechatronics engineering; industrial controllers and embedded controllers; microcontrollers and embedded systems; industrial automation; production engineering; machine dynamics and controls; and mechanical design.

Demonstrable interest in teaching and mentoring.

Ability to work within an established course/curriculum structure.

Proficiency in communicating technical information in written and spoken English.

Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications PhD in engineering with a focus on mechatronics and manufacturing engineering.

Experience in teaching engineering software programs typically used in manufacturing or mechanical engineering.

Experience in teaching lab-based courses at the college or university level.

Experience with remote and online teaching.

Experience with course management tools such as Canvas.

Experience developing instructional materials for online or hybrid courses.

Experience supervising undergraduate and graduate assistants.

Experience in process development and/or hands-on mechatronics system design.

Demonstrable knowledge of online pedagogy and current trends in online education.
