Mechanical Design Engineer

Role Purpose :
Mechanical Designer will have the tasks to complete the designs within the area of expertise in a competent manner, to company standards and to agreed schedules with minimal supervision. This role is to work within one of the Platform engineering teams, responsible for maintaining and improving the design of our highly configurable product platforms, including the bespoke design of hardware to suit specific customer needs.

Key Responsibilities Delivering component and device conception and design, 3D solid models, detail drawings and modifications. To prepare system layouts, Sales system drawing packs, drawings required for sales/service quotes and customer requests. To create and check Bills of Materials. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the Materials Resource Planning (MRP) system to ensure that parts and Bills of material are added correctly to ERP system. To support other departments by answering queries and requests for information. Leading the problem solving process when issues arise on tools during manufacture, test or customer sites. General drawing office duties and admin, including maintenance of accurate, up-to-date drawing lists and registers used company wide. Create robust designs that have re-useable parts and assemblies, ensuring that system attributes are completed fully and correctly. Create drawing to OIPT standard format and comply with company quality, and other regulatory and compliance standards. Work as part of a team to develop product specifications and resolve business and product issues. Demonstrate a complete understanding of the Engineering Change Request process to ensure that Engineering Change Requests are actioned appropriately. To ensure that agreed contribution to projects is achieved and escalate situations where that contribution is jeopardised. Knowledgeable application of product lifecycle and configuration techniques. Agree and review design tasks / milestones with Design Team Leader
KPIs' : Drawings produced in time for purchasing to order components and to meet project milestones. Effective relationships with customers and suppliers. Milestones and deadlines are met for production and sales quote drawings. Ease of use of drawing databases for all other employees in the company. Accurate history of components and changes.
Education/Qualifications: Engineering Degree, HNC or equivalent, City & Guilds Full Tech Cert.
Professional Skills/ Abilities: Design of precision mechanical systems and mechanisms. Technical problem solving. Knowledge of castings, machined components, sheet metal and mouldings. Solid Edge CAD (3D Modelling) software. Microsoft Word & Excel – competent. Microsoft Project – limited use required. Professional engineering drawing/design best practice. Aware of product cost, reliability and safety issues. Lifecycle management knowledge. Keeps up with external trends in job area. Identifies opportunities to improve systems and procedures and minimise or eliminate wastage.
