Where life meets Science…Chesterford Research Park offers advanced laboratory and office space set within 250 acres of idyllic parkland near Cambridge – modern, dynamic, flexible facilities perfectly appointed for biotechnology, pharmaceutical and R&D companies. You will have access to a stylish, fully air conditioned health and fitness centre, an onsite restaurant, Lunch & Learn development activities, all within a spacious environment while utilising the most advanced technology.


This role will then relocate to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, this site combines world-class biomedical research, patient care and education on a single site location in the heart of Cambridge. This new purpose-built site will bring together the company’s research and development activity in a pioneering strategic R&D centre and global corporate headquarters. The building has been designed with the open architecture reflecting AstraZeneca’s collaborative approach to research. Open laboratories and transparent glass walls will enable new ways of working across disciplines, whilst a central courtyard will put science on full display!

The vision of AstraZeneca Oncology is to redefine cancer, redefine our solutions to cancer, and restore patients' lives. To achieve this, we have an exciting and diverse portfolio that focuses on four scientific platforms that we believe show the greatest potential for yielding effective medicines for cancer patients. These scientific platforms include; Immuno-Oncology (IO), Tumor Drivers & Resistance (TDR), DNA Damage Response (DDR) and we are developing therapeutic agents across multiple modalities including; small molecules, biologics, Antibody Drug Conjugates (ADCs), nano-medicines and PROTACs.


The Oncology Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) department provides ADME/PK, as well as translational PK/PD Modelling & Simulation support to our discovery and development portfolio. We are looking for an experienced DMPK scientist who has a passion for in-vitro ADME and / or biotransformation sciences and the experience and expertise to champion and develop these scientific areas.


In this role you will provide disciplinary scientific leadership in collaboration with the DMPK project leaders to AZ oncology drug discovery and development projects. You will exercise matrix leadership and tutor junior scientists by providing expert advice and context for the interpretation of complex data. Functional representation on oncology drug discovery projects is a development opportunity of the role. The position is based in Cambridge UK.


What you’ll do


Accountabilities


Devising and conducting bespoke ADME and / or biotransformation experimental science to support oncology portfolio projects (multiple modalities). Delivering analytical & in-vitro solutions for challenging small molecules including beyond rule of five compounds. Recommending and leading innovations within the discipline Providing disciplinary scientific leadership for less experienced scientists Publishing papers in internationally recognised journals Contributing to discipline review groups Supporting the department’s leadership team in both the strategic vision and operational effectiveness

Minimum Requirements – Education, Experience and Capabilities


The ideal candidate should have a Ph. D. degree or corresponding experience in a relevant scientific discipline, with several years of experience in drug discovery and/or early development or alternatively a first degree and extensive relevant additional experience in drug discovery and early development.

Extensive experience and expertise in several of the following:


Experimental determination of in-vitro ADME properties e.g. metabolic clearance, potential for drug-drug-interactions, permeability or transporter properties Designing, conducting and evaluating studies to identify metabolites of drug candidates (in-vitro / in-vivo) and devising biotransformation pathways Experience of LC-MS/MS method development and problem solving for quantitative bioanalysis Development, validation and improvement of in-vitro ADME assays Understanding of correlations between phys-chem and in-vitro ADME properties and in-vivo PK behaviour of compounds. Broad understanding of all DMPK needed to support drug discovery and / or development projects Scientific publication track record in in-vitro ADME and / or biotransformation sciences Excellent interpersonal skills that lead to successful collaborative work-relationships is a must have

Additional details


No direct line reports, but there is an expectation to mentor junior scientists and opportunities to supervise students and interns or PhDs to pursue scientific projects.
