Materials Scientist - ARfusion Technology

META is seeking a Materials Scientist - ARfusion™ Technology for our facility in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. You will play a key role in materials and process development and fabrication of a wide range embedded smart technologies into ophthalmic lenses. META® has a broad range of platform technologies that include metamaterials, holographic elements, optical filters, sensors, conductive films, and more.

What You’ll Do:



Your role will be to develop materials and processes for META’s ARfusion™technologies, including development and operation of casting prescription lenses with embedded optical and electrical function. You will be part of an experts team to innovate and develop custom processes for new products and applications, including working hands-on within a diverse, multi-disciplinary team focused upon integration of holographic and conductive films into eyewear applications including high performance imaging systems, integrated optical sub-systems and smart lenses for Augmented Reality and defense eyewear. This role includes process innovation, DOE’s (Design of Experiments) and identifying technical objectives to meet customer needs, by creating and implementing technical development plans to achieve clear goals. Reporting to the Manager, ARfusion™ Technology.



Some of the typical responsibilities will include:



Analyze, research, design and develop casting materials and imbedding methods, including their fabrication using novel application processes, for use in components, and subsystems. Apply principles of chemistry, physics, and material behaviour to develop optical and photosensitive polymers processing, optical monomers, mixing, specifications, fabrication, and testing. Perform material analyses that include, but are not limited to, failure analysis of components, optical performance, life predictions, and definition of requirement specifications. Designing and building processes for high-volume manufacturing operation to hand over to production, which combines the acquired custom machinery and processes using automated systems. Providing advice, guidance, and training to staff and joiner members in support of experiments, development, equipment usage and reporting.

Minimum qualifications:



Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Materials Science, or related. 5 years’ experience in science engineering, process development, lab operation, product development, product reliability, and materials safety practices. Strong analytical thinker with the ability to deliver original, innovative ideas and approaches to difficult problems. Experience with an innovative, fast paced environment proving products meet industry standards. Experience working with optical/display products, optical monomers, polymer chemistry, bonding, thin film layers integration and polymer coatings.

Preferred qualifications:



Experience working with eyewear, defense, and AR display industries’ standards. Experience dealing with specialized customer requirements. Background in thermoforming, cast molding, optical injection molding (IM), precision optics, optical films, and ophthalmic post processing (optical coating, grinding, edging).
