This position will be dedicated to a research project aiming to unravel the fundamental interfacial processes in materials employed in flow-based energy storage systems. Experimental work will involve design, fabrication, synthesis and characterization of model interfaces and suitable devices that can help elucidate the relationships between interface and mass transport. This position will involve a considerable amount of experimental laboratory work with a variety of electrochemical based methods (galvanostatic/potentiostatic, and hybrid potential/current control methods, electrochemical impedance and quartz crystal microbalance) applied to flow cell type of devices. The work will also include complementary characterization work employing X-ray crystallography and surface imaging via SEM, FIB-SEM and AFM.
Position Requirements
The applicant must hold a Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a closely related field. The applicant must have a strong background in fundamental and applied electrochemistry of energy conversion and storage systems. Experience with flow batteries design, assembly and testing are required. Experience with electrochemical methods, including RDE, EIS, EQCM is strongly preferred. Hands-on experience with crystallographic characterization tools (XRD, PDF) and with imaging techniques such as SEM, FIB-SEM and AFM are highly welcome. Experience with CAD design software and software coding are also welcomed. The applicant is expected to think and work independently and conduct research in a highly interdisciplinary, fast paced environment of chemists, physicists and materials scientists. Applicants must possess good communication skills and be fluent in both spoken, and written English. To be eligible, candidates must have completed their Ph.D. within the last three years and graduate no later than December 2022.
Applicants are encouraged to submit a cover letter with a brief description of research interests, curriculum vitae with brief description of research accomplishments, list of publications, and the names of three references to be contacted directly by the hiring committee.
Note: Nanoscience, organic or bio-related areas are not in consideration for this position.
