Staff Scientist - Computational Chemistry & Data Science

We seek an experienced scientist with a background in computational chemistry and data science to apply their skills in DFT, molecular dynamics, and empirical and machine learning modeling to drive materials design research supporting the development of high performing lithium metal batteries. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of experimentalists including chemists, chemical engineers, and materials scientists, as well as with external machine learning consultants, using data-driven approaches to accelerate improvements in cell performance. Prior experience in computational chemistry or physics with an emphasis on the development and management of high-throughput, automated data management systems capable of supporting a machine learning approach to materials discovery is necessary to be successful in this role. Additional experience independently executing and analyzing molecular dynamics simulations of complex materials systems is ideal. In this role you will be tasked with taking ownership of and improving an existing multiscale modeling effort leading to demonstrated improvements in battery cell performance. Your impact on the development of more efficient, higher accuracy predictive methods supporting the materials team’s research efforts at Sepion will be critical to accelerating the commercialization timeline of next-gen electric-vehicle batteries. This position is a rare opportunity to be at the forefront growing an advanced-materials startup into a flourishing business.

Key Responsibilities

Take ownership of and improve upon existing DFT and MD workflows for materials development projects including electrolyte, membrane, and current collector design Support high throughput multiscale modeling, incorporating DFT-and MD- derived properties into machine learning models predictive of real-life cell performance Analyze and model cell performance data, drawing conclusions back to materials insights to inform the rational design of battery materials Develop user-friendly database architecture supported by automated data uploads and downloads tracking results from simulations, modeling, and experimental materials and cell performance Work closely with team of experimentalists to drive materials innovation leading to improvements in lithium metal battery cell performance Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to keep data flowing in an existing closed-loop materials optimization program

Skills Knowledge and Expertise

A deep alignment with Sepion’s core values and mission to sustainably power humankind Desire to learn and implement DE&I best practices for team building and management to solidify a culture of inclusion; commitment to regular self-reflection to understand and mitigate inherent biases Experience providing and receiving impactful feedback to support professional growth in the spirit of continuous improvement Deep computational chemistry or physics background with experience using simulations and data analysis to drive materials research Past success collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in an R&D environment Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Location & Benefits

Oakland, CA. Full-time. Salary and equity options depend on experience. A health care supplement is included. Applications will be screened as received. The position is available immediately.
