The Advanced Science Research Center at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY ASRC) elevates scientific research and education at CUNY and beyond through initiatives in five distinctive, but increasingly interconnected disciplines: environmental sciences, nanoscience, neuroscience, photonics, and structural biology. The CUNY ASRC promotes a collaborative, interdisciplinary research culture with renowned researchers from each of the initiatives working side-by-side with undergraduate and graduate students in the ASRC’s labs and core facilities, sharing equipment that is among the most advanced available. The CUNY ASRC also invites and collaborates with researchers from all CUNY campuses to take advantage of its facilities and resources to advance interdisciplinary scientific research across the University. Importantly, the CUNY ASRC also engages in K-16+ STEM education, including pipeline programs, workforce development, and outreach to the public to promote science literacy, engagement, and empowerment and advance science-based policy and STEM education in partnership with local public schools, community groups, and CUNY community and senior colleges. Reporting to the Animal Facilities Operations Manager, the Animal Care Technician in the Comparative Medicine Unit of the ASRC will perform routine animal husbandry and care as well as cleaning and sanitation, as prescribed by the ASRC and federal and state laws and regulations. In addition, the Animal Care Technician will provide assistance with research-related activities (e.g. data collection and various experimental procedures such as the administration of injections, specimen collection, and animal observation as prescribed by research protocols). The Animal Care Technician is responsible for maintaining the animal facility and maintaining records of animal care and health and facility activities, according to standard operating procedures and regulatory requirements.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Provides research assistance to the research staff and provides general technical assistance to other animal care staff, which may include the collection of biological samples for diagnostic testing and research purposes;
Assists in the research of, and the record keeping for, breeding colonies; monitors and observes animal behavior, maintaining accurate and detailed records regarding the identity, health and habits of various research animal species;
Weighs or restrains animals when required for various technical procedures;
Maintains and records the distribution of specialized animal diets and logs environments following prescribed Standard Operating Procedures;
Performs animal husbandry including changing cages, feeding/watering animals using specialized techniques and equipment, and developing skills necessary to safely and humanely handle various animal species;
Maintains animal rooms in clean and odorless condition and maintains room census; prepares cages and provides sufficient quantities of clean and bedded cages as well as other supplies and materials to animal holding rooms;
Provides adequate quantities of clean feed and water to all animals on a daily basis;
Tracks and maintains adequate supplies and inventory to support daily activities throughout facilities; provides to the supervisor routine supply/equipment orders (i.e. feed and bedding, disposable supplies, equipment repairs and service);
Ensures preparation and proper sanitation of equipment;Independently operates any and all cage wash and sanitizing equipment; assesses conditions of caging/equipment and makes recommendations for equipment repair or replacement;
Reports any issues related to animal husbandry, facilities, or veterinary health issues to supervisor;
Follows all animal health and safety protocols; participates in on-the-job training required to develop new skills, learn new techniques and implement new policies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience relevant to the research being performed.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
AALAS certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT).
Prior experience in the caring and handling of animals.
Ability to learn how to use equipment.
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
