The department of electrical and computer engineering (ECE, http://www.engineering.pitt.edu/ECE/) at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt, https://www.pitt.edu) invites applications for the position of tenure-stream, full professor in the field of electric power engineering. This senior faculty position will include a prestigious endowed professorship from the R. K. Mellon Foundation. Although all specializations of electric power engineering will be considered, the candidate must have experience in building research programs with strong industrial engagement as well as align with and serve a leading role in the Energy Grid Institute (http://grid.pitt.edu) at the Energy Innovation Center (EIC, https://www.engineeringx.pitt.edu/EIC/) in Pittsburgh. In the EIC, Pitt is the lead tenant for one of the nation’s most innovative facilities for research in electric power. The expected start date for this position is Sept. 1, 2022. Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. in a related field, at least a decade of experience beyond the doctorate, scholarly and leadership qualifications commensurate with an endowed full professor, synergy with strengths in our Swanson School of Engineering (SSOE, http://www.engineering.pitt.edu/) and across campus, and commitment to high-quality education for a diverse body of undergraduate and graduate students in ECE.

The ECE Department at Pitt dates back to 1893 when it was created by two engineering legends, George Westinghouse and Reginald Fessenden, and for 128 years it has excelled in education, research, and service. Today, Pitt-ECE features innovative undergraduate and graduate programs and world-class research centers and labs, combining theory with practice at the nexus of electrical and computer engineering, for our students to learn, develop, and lead lives of impact. Pitt-ECE is experiencing major growth and achievement in both its academic and research programs, with 18 new faculty members hired in the past five years.
Pitt-ECE is home to the Energy GRID Institute and the NSF Center for Space, High-performance, and Resilient Computing (SHREC). It is a leading partner in the Pitt Center for Energy (CfE) and the Petersen Institute of NanoScience and Engineering (PINSE). ECE faculty members benefit from strong collaborations with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and School of Medicine, Pittsburgh Quantum Institute (PQI), Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), Pitt Center for Research Computing (CRC), Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation (MCSI), and many dozens of industry and government partners in the region and beyond, including many in the field of electric power. Dating back to the pioneering days of George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla, Pittsburgh is historically known as the birthplace for electricity innovation.
With 38 full-time faculty members, Pitt-ECE offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering. Enrollment consists of about 500 undergraduate and 200 graduate students. The SSOE recently completed a $100 million renovation and redesign of Benedum Engineering Hall (BEH), home of Pitt-ECE, with state-of-the-art teaching and research labs. As part of its growth, Pitt-ECE has additional space in Schenley Place, a new research building within walking distance of BEH, and the EIC building in downtown Pittsburgh, both major hubs for industry and university collaboration.
