Job Description

A Research Technician position is available in NREL’s Chemistry and Nanoscience Center to explore vapor-phase materials growth using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD).Both silicon and other semiconductor nanoparticle materials will be grown for use in batteries and related energy storage concepts.

Basic Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience. Or, related Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience.

Additional Required Qualifications

Experiments will be conducted under the direction of staff scientists, and key tasks include operating and maintaining the PECVD vapor-phase growth equipment. The candidate will be required to work closely with the Environment, Health, & Safety team to follow safe work procedures, as well as to handle sample material and waste in a clean, well-organized fashion. Attention to detail and a focus on safety given the potentially high hazard nature of the work are essential attributes for successful candidates.


Teamwork and collaboration define the modern scientific approach, and the Research Technician will need to partner and team internally as part of their support of multiple projects. Substantial acquaintance with and understanding of general aspects of the job with a broad understanding of the detailed aspects of the job. Intermediate to advanced skills in research techniques and practices. Good written, verbal, team, interpersonal and communication skills.

Experience with vacuum-based vapor-phase growth systems.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week) Annual Salary Range: $45,700 - $73,000

Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
