Postdoctoral Appointee - Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems

Basic Purpose: The Materials Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral appointee in Fundamental Interfacial Studies on Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems.

This position will be dedicated to research projects aiming to unravel the fundamental interfacial processes in materials employed in Li-ion, beyond Li-ion, and lead-acid batteries, as well as in oxidation or organic molecules in aqueous electrolytes. Experimental work will involve design, synthesis, characterization, and degradation studies of model interfaces that can help elucidate their structure-function relationships (activity, selectivity and stability).

Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

The applicant must hold a Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a closely related field. The applicant must have a strong background in analytical chemistry (including hands-on experience on ICP-MS and/or LC-MS) and/or fundamental electrochemistry of energy conversion and storage systems (experience beyond coin cell testing). Hands-on experience in performing experiments inside controlled environments (glovebox) is preferred. Hands-on experience with crystallographic characterization tools (XRD, PDF) and with imaging techniques such as SEM, FIB-SEM and AFM are welcome.

This position will involve a considerable amount of experimental laboratory work with a variety of electrochemical based methods (galvanostatic/potentiostatic, and hybrid potential/current control methods targeted towards electropolishing and electrodeposition) coupled to analytical techniques such as ICP-MS and LC-MS to perform in situ measurements of surface dissolution and product distribution of organic molecules reacting at the electrode surface. The work will also include complimentary characterization work which include X-ray crystallography and surface imaging via SEM, FIB-SEM and AFM.

The applicant is expected to think and work independently and conduct research in a highly interdisciplinary environment of chemists, physicists and materials scientists. Applicants must possess good communication skills and be fluent in both spoken, and written English. To be eligible, candidates must have completed their Ph.D. within the last three years. Applicants are encouraged to submit cover letter with a brief description of research interests, curriculum vitae with brief description of research accomplishments, list of publications, and the names of three references to be contacted directly by the hiring committee.

Note: Nanoscience, organic or bio-related areas are not in consideration for this position.
